Is autumn early?

Post by Andee »

In several parts of the UK, including parts of southern England and East Anglia, there are early signs of browning and leaf-drop in oak, birch, and horse chestnut trees.
Have you noticed signs of an early autumn? I have already noticed some trees on the turn in Yorkshire.

Im not an expert by any means but its probably more a sign of lack of water, around here anyway. There is a slight autumnal feel first thing in the morning and I have noticed that although its warm with clear skies, the sun isnt as strong as it was a couple of weeks ago. Thats about it really...could be very different in a week or so though :D

In our village, poplars were planted after WW1 in memory of the local lads that died - there's an avenue of them known locally as Vimy Ridge and the badge of the cricket club shows them too. There are little lines of them all over the village and whenever they get blown over, more are planted. It's a rather lovely village thing - I don't see them like that anywhere else.
They've all shed at least half their leaves and always on the north edge first.
I've never seen so much fruit on the trees though and the few blackberries that are ripe taste amazing!

Oh my way in to town, every late August/ early september I look out for the leaves changing colour, this year it happened about 2 weeks ago. I just put it down to a long somewhat dry summer, but it has still followed the pattern of which trees show the signs first.

Hi everyone, just returned from Czech Republic 30c as I departed Brno airport arriving in Stansted 19c, cloudy, windy, eventually wet. Over in Europe there was talk of autumn arriving three weeks earlier than usual even though they had a recent hot spell. The swallows were assembling for departure too, leaves on the turn, bilberries had been in abundance apparently. Berries in Herts abundant too I’m told. Very glad of the rain as the garden desperately needed a good drink of rainwater. And my nose is cold! That’s a sure sign 😂
